New semester, new topics, old, old issues

We'll be discussing human freedom in EII this morning, and what it means to be free. This, given the stated aim of liberal education is "... education worthy of a free person."

Our immediate example and foil for thought experiment is the plight of a young Saudi woman, now resident in Canada:

Here's the Canvas announcement:

You should read ahead in Pollan as soon as you have a copy, starting at the beginning. We'll read the whole book.
In the meantime, here's the reading I suggested today. We'll discuss this Thursday.

Here's a video on the same topic (there'll be an ad first):

My profession

"Professors should profess," is a probably-garbled quote from Dr. Mark Lapping, former President of Unity College, also a former mentor of mine.

Today and Monday are the last class meetings in EcoEco this semester, and so you get to hear what I think about ecological economics and the chances for human life on the planet, in particular to compare and contrast with Daly and Farley.

There are two artifacts, one a video, the other a paper. The paper was completed some time after the video. It has not yet been published.

Here's the movie:

My Profession Part 2: Second lecture outline:

We'll kick off with the news from Poland, noting the conspicuous role of "fossil elites."

I'll also bring up the Yellow Vesters again, as an example of the likely result from what I would term "recessionary" climate policy.

If time allows, I may then bring up Cynthia Occasio Cortez's "Green New Deal," published only last week, to see if it has anything in common at all with my "Green Keynesianism." (If so, she owes me a footnote.)
