Cryptic cornucopia
I was looking for a bit of lumber yesterday and I happened upon the squash, onion, garlic and dry bean harvest curing in the attic of the Sustainability Barn.
Hiding away up there. Who knew? But just look at this all this food!
This abundant supply is destined for the Food Pantry. All of it was grown on the college lands, by the college's gardening staff, together with student help, through the Veggies for All Program.
Here we see dry beans, drying. I guess that's what dry beans do.
Followed by some excellent onions.
And an abundance of multicolored squash.
I have to say that, for me at least, seeing this food makes all the barn-building effort worthwhile.
Kudos to Tim Libbey, Garden manager, and Sara Trunzo, the Veggies for All coordinator, for making this happen.

good post, all that food is impressive.
Hey Mick,
Thanks for your coverage of our work. We're excited that you're excited and hope that the rest of the Unity College Community is feeling the same way.
Here's some background and interesting stats:
Veggies For All, a project of the Unity Barn Raisers, was started 3 years ago by Tim Libby (also the Unity College garden manager) and others in Thorndike. It grew about 7,000 pound of food for local hunger relief efforts in the first two years.
This season, Veggies For All located its home base at Unity College to share infrastructure and combine forces...
The result: One acre in cultivation (2 plots on campus and 2 off-site).
We're looking at ending THIS SEASON alone with about 12,000 pounds of food going to hunger relief partners, primarily the Volunteer Regional Food Pantry in Unity.
Tim and I are looking forward to bringing this project to it's full potential by nurturing this kind of collaboration. Of course, it's handy to be at the College, where energetic students can pitch-in with our work.

And, hey, we've been really getting some great use out of the barn! You photos represented about 3,000# of squash/pumpkins, 300# of onions, and 100# of dry beans.
